What We Do
Mid-Atlantic Technology and Environmental Research, Inc. (M-AT) is a consulting firm that was formed in 1992 to conduct specialized marine remote sensing and marine target identification surveys. Since that time, M-AT has completed more than 20 projects per year in the United States and Caribbean, including magnetometer and sonar surveys.
M-AT collects, processes, and interprets geotechnical and cultural remote sensing data related to marine and freshwater environments. M-AT provides advice based on the results, generally for the construction or enhancement of port facilities, industry, or waterways and coastlines.
Our primary clients have included various districts of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Navy, the Federal Highway Administration, the Mineral Management Service, the Department of Interior, and the Department of Commerce. M-AT also has worked with various state agencies, engineering firms, and private individuals.
Capabilities:
- Marine remote sensing
- Marine geophysical surveys
- Underwater archaeological surveys
- Underwater site mapping / Data recovery
- Hydrographic surveys
- Pipeline and cable route surveys
- UXO / UXB detection surveys in shallow waters
M-AT has three primary remote sensing specialists who collectively have more than 70 years of remote sensing and offshore marine survey experience. M-AT personnel help our clients to achieve their engineering goals by integrating modern technology and innovative methodologies. The result is quality remote sensing data and geophysical information that is key to project planning.
M-AT maintains the majority of our own remote sensing equipment in-house. Each of our key personnel has a great deal of experience in troubleshooting and field repair of marine electronics and computer systems. Each person has extensive experience not only in equipment operation but also in the interpretation of remote sensing data.
Equipment Specialization:
- Marine magnetometers (Geometrics, Marine Magnetics)
- Digital side-scan sonars (Klein, EdgeTech, Marine Sonic)
- Depth recorders (Odom, Ocean Data Equipment)
- Sub-bottom (EdgeTech, Klein, Ocean Data Equipment)
- Multi-beam sonar (Reson, Odom)
- Multi-channel seismic (Geometrics, Bubble Pulser)
See full Equipment List.
Although M-AT normally uses various Differential Global Positioning Systems for accurate positioning and data recording, we have experience in all types of positioning systems. All position systems can be interfaced with our remote sensing equipment and with navigation systems for controlled surveys and the production of accurate survey records and maps.
M-AT can provide our clients with detailed project reports that include:
- Competent site/target assessment and analysis
- Digital mapping
- GIS development
- Sonar mosaics
- Accurate volume calculations
- Route planning and assessment
- Bottom classification and assessment
Many of our surveys are designed to identify hazardous materials or submerged cultural resources prior to dredging activities. M-AT is one of the more experienced groups in the world at locating, identifying, and the assessment of manmade objects underwater.
M-AT has been particularly successful in the location identification, mapping, and recovery of objects buried below the seabed.
